High mileage running

In 2011 I embarked on a 6 month experiment of running 6-7 days/week, covering over 3,000 miles. The termination of the experiment was ugly enough that it’s only now, over 2 years later, that I’m ready to write about it. http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Notes_from_a_high_mileage_experiment

Updated comparison of marathon training plans

I've made a significant update to my comparison of marathon training plans. The changes include:

  • Adding more plans to the comparison, covering 7 different books and 38 different plans.
  • How to adjust a plan midway through.
  • What to look for in a training plan.
  • A summary of the best plans for experienced and new marathon runners.
  • A more detailed analysis of how each plan suits different categories of runner. Want to know how Jack Daniels Plan A would suit a first time marathoner who has lots of experience and talent at racing shorter distances? It’s there.
  • Details of all long runs, along with analysis of how quickly the plans ramp up.

KetoAnalsys - Ketostix Image Analyzer

I have created a utility for photographically analyzing Ketostix (urine ketone test strips) to give a more accurate reading. Normally Ketostix only gives a rough idea of the ketone levels based on matching the color of the test strip to reference color bars. This utility analyzes a photograph of the Ketostix and color bars to interpolate the actual value. The utility is somewhat experimental, and getting the right picture can be tricky.

Running and "Why do Bedouins wear black robes in hot deserts"

I've added an analysis of the article “Why do Bedouins wear black robes in hot deserts” to my page on running in the heat. This article is sometimes misinterpreted to suggest that there is no advantage to wearing white clothing in hot environments, but the paper's conclusions are rather more nuanced.

Potassium

I wrote a short article on potassium, which is widely misunderstood due to the way the recommended intake was established. If you’re healthy, you don’t need potassium in your sports drink. http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Potassium
